Four years since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine

24 February 2026 marks four years since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia. The attack began on 24 February 2022 with missile strikes across the country and ground assaults from the north, east and south. Fighting is currently concentrated mainly in eastern Ukraine, including the Donetsk and Luhansk regions. Parts of the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions remain under Russian control.

According to the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, more than 10,000 civilian deaths have been confirmed since February 2022. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees reports that millions of people have fled the country and millions more remain internally displaced. Ukraine continues to operate under martial law and maintains nationwide mobilisation. Western states continue to provide military and financial assistance to Kyiv, and sanctions against Russia remain in place. Hostilities and aerial attacks are still being reported along the front line and in other areas of Ukraine.
