The United States and Israel carried out air strikes on targets in Iran on 28 February 2026. On 1 March 2026, Iranian state media reported that Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed in the attacks. US President Donald Trump confirmed Ali Khamenei’s death.
Israel said that senior figures from Iran’s military command and security services were also killed in the strikes. Among the dead, Israel named Mohammad Pakpour, commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps; Abdolrahim Mousawi, chief of staff of Iran’s armed forces; Aziz Nasirzadeh, Iran’s defence minister; and Ali Shamkhani, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council.
